By the end of this course, you’ll not only get an overview of XenApp, XenDesktop, and NetScaler, but you’ll also understand the requests from your Citrix admin.

About the author

Jo Harder has been involved with virtualization technologies for nearly 20 years, since the days of WinFrame/MetaFrame and the infancy of hypervisors. She started her technical career at Citrix in 1999, where she became a Senior Architect. Her 11-year tenure included a combination of Citrix Consulting and Technical Readiness roles. Post Citrix, Jo has taken on positions focused on consulting services and hosting provider services, as well as the creation of technical materials for various audiences. Starting in February 2015, she has been a Citrix Technology Professional awardee each year.

Course Overview

Network administrators often get blame for issues that arise in a Citrix environment, but is the network really at fault? Sometimes it seems like the network admin and Citrix admin are speaking different languages. This course helps network admins, as well as security and firewall admins, to gain an understanding of Citrix technologies as they impact the network. By completing this course, not only will you get an overview of XenApp, XenDesktop, and NetScaler, but you’ll also understand the requests from your Citrix admin and be able to work cohesively towards providing a better experience for your users.

Network and WAN Considerations

I hope you’re feeling good about what we’ve just learned about secure remote access. The next topic is network and WAN considerations. In this module, we’ll talk about mapping Citrix session data to the OSI layers, then QoS, and finally we’ll wrap up with NetScaler SD-WAN.

I’ve learned so much about Citrix technologies and network requirements in this course. It’s been very beneficial for me to understand how XenApp and XenDesktop function, as well as ICA/HDX and the numerous ports that are required. Taking a look at NetScaler Gateway functionality, including QoS and WAN traffic was helpful as well. Lastly, how we looked at Director and the other tools that can help pinpoint issues, I’m sure I’ll be using that in my day to day work. Now that I understand much more about Citrix technologies, I can work better with my Citrix administrator.
